Quick Tips: Salar de Uyuni and Bolivian Salt Flats Travel Guide

Quick Tips:

Salar de Uyuni

A short and sweet Salar de Uyuni Travel Guide

Uyuni Overview

Impressive views against a dry, high altitude desert scapes by day and cities filled with indigenous Andean culture by night.  Uyuni packs a lot of outdoor and adventure experience into a short trip on the cheap. Salt flats. Lagoons. Guanocs. Great people. Its all here

My Adventurous side says: I could spend hours taking jump pics at the salt flats. My Cultured side says: Indigenous Andean and Bolivian culture is rich and all around (unlike more European influenced parts of South America). My Flashpacker side says: A little difficult finding good service, but worth the experience

Companies to Trust

  • Cruz Andina/Expediciones Sajama (travel agency): Provided a great experience on the Salar de Uyuni trek and delivered “Super Mario”, or super hero of a driver/guide

Pro Flashpacker Tip

  • Fly from Uyuni to La Paz to save time and avoid a pretty bumpy ride

  • Border Crossing from Chile to Bolivia: There is a checklist of things to bring to the border crossing (yellow fever vaccination proof, passport photos, passport copies, crisp bills, etc.). We didn’t have it but were lucky enough to get by with a $20 bribe, though I wouldn’t try it again.  Come prepared to the Bolivia -> Chile border crossing
