What if the next great nation had no borders, no government, and no fixed land—just a shared identity and global movement?
Imagine a world in which borders dissolved, making way for a life in which the beautiful beaches of Bali were a short walk away from the old-world architecture and cafes of Paris as a stop on the way to the Tango Milongas and barbecue asados of Buenos Aires. Now, imagine that this traveler’s Pangea was your life. Imagine yourself as a citizen of a nation that stretched the expanse of the globe, crafting a life with puzzle pieces of experiences that fell into place to create life of your dreams. Now, don’t imagine. Because this is the reality of 35 million unknowing citizens of the Digital Nomad Nation.
Unknown to the world, a new nation predicted 27 years ago has risen, spanning the globe, and spilling from the internet as the first digital nation born of the internet. Without realizing it, these individual “digital nomads” as part of the “Digital Nomad Nation” are disrupting paradigms and redefining work, life, and statehood in the digital age.
In 2022, after 5 years traveling the world as a digital nomad Carlos Grider decided to search for an answer to the questions, “Who are digital nomads? What do they do? Where do they go?” The answer to those questions, that came after interviewing and surveying hundreds of digital nomads around the world, went deeper than I could have imagined, with a story that stretches back 25 years, and foretells a revolutionary 25 years to come. But, this is the first chapter of that story I passionately share in this book Digital Nomad Nation: The Rise of a Borderless Generation.
DIGITAL NOMAD NATION: RISE OF A BORDERLESS GENERATION, leads readers through the story of the rise of the digital nomad. From the first mention in 1997, to Carlos Grider’s discovery 25 years later that the global digital nomad community numbered over 35 million people, and was functioning like a decentralized country – all born online.
Part sociological deep dive, part travel memoir, and part manifesto for a new way of living, Digital Nomad Nation explores the rise of a borderless generation redefining work, community, and nationhood—and how they may become the world’s first digital country.
Driven by findings from the 2022 Global Digital Nomad Study research, hundreds of interviews and surveys of digital nomads on the road and investigating in dozens of cities over 7 years and 60+ countries traveled as a digital nomad.
Digital Nomad Nation digs deeply into a population breaking the old rules in work, life, travel, and citizenship, and presents them engagingly, dissecting a major cultural shift in progress in the vein of Malcolm Gladwell meets digital nomadism—a sociological deep dive rather than a “how-to” book.
Digital Nomad Nation is to the future of work what Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers was to success—an eye-opening examination of the hidden forces shaping modern nomadism, combining research, storytelling, and social analysis to reveal how technology, economics, and culture are redefining what it means to live and work in the digital age.
With breadth and depth this story not only inspires aspiring nomads and awakens current nomads and remote workers to the movement they’re unknowingly participating in and its untapped potential, but also shares a novel perspective of digital nomads with sociologists, policymakers, and companies that has not been addressed since Makimoto’s pioneering book in 1997.
