If you aren’t just traveling abroad but living abroad as a nomad, flexpat, or stable expat, a US address to receive mail and access it in a timely fashion is essential.
Whether you’re receiving a replacement bank card, tax documents, or an apostilled background check, having a central, continuous, and stable address and mail scanning and forwarding service makes life abroad immensely easier. On the other hand, not having an address or mail receiving point can be a showstopper.
Beyond receiving routine mail, in my 9 years abroad, I’ve used my primary address (via a virtual mailbox I’ve trusted the entire time) very inventively to get what I need. I’ve mailed important documents back to be stored in my box, had packages routed to this address to be held until I was in a place with a good address long enough to have them forwarded to me in Latam and Asia, and I’ve had the address as my continuous automatic receiving point for new/replacement bank cards, payout checks, and as the registered agent location for my LLC.
Maintaining that mailbox, for less than $20 a month, has allowed me to keep a verifiable, easily trackable history and a receiving point available 24/7 no matter what adventure I’m on or how out of contact I am with the world.
Before you decide to go nomad, live as a flexpat, or become a Sovereign Expat, do yourself a favor and set up a virtual mailbox.
But that’s likely the reason why you’re reading this, and you’re just trying to find the best virtual mailbox option for you, so let me help.
In this guide, I’ll share the 14 best virtual mailbox options to have while living abroad, how you should assess the right virtual mailbox for you (based on my own experience as an expat), and the steps to opening one. Not from the perspective of an affiliate-pushing blogger or a self-interested service provider, but as another American living self-sufficiently who understands how difficult yet critical these logistics can be.
Additionally, if you’re in the pickle of needing a virtual residential address service to avoid having your bank account cancelled, I’ll share the newest, most common, and most trusted options for residential addresses available today to use for bank accounts, driver’s license registration, and state domicile (potentially for tax benefits purposes).
Read on for the ultimate list and guide to virtual mailbox addresses for nomads, flexpats, and expats.

WHAT A VIRTUAL MAILBOX IS AND WHY YOU NEED ONE IF YOU LIVE ABROAD
A virtual mailbox is a service that provides you with a real street address at a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA), staffed by a team that receives and, ideally, scans the documents you receive, as well as holds packages for pickup by you in person or by a trusted individual. When mail arrives at that address, the team scans the envelope or package, documents the contents if there are any and you request it, then uploads the digitized documents to a secure online portal, and gives you options to view, forward, shred, or store the item.
Why expats and nomads need a virtual mailbox before they leave:
- Banks and financial institutions require a US address to keep accounts open
- A virtual address is a great “receiving and holding” point for replacement credit cards when you won’t be at a place longer than a few weeks.
- The IRS and state tax agencies need a valid mailing address for compliance
- Business formations, LLCs, and registered agent services require a physical location
- Many virtual mailbox services also provide LLC registered agent services, simplifying the personal and business logistics
- Driver’s license renewals and state residency often depend on an in-state address, and maintaining that address makes receiving renewed driver’s licenses easy
- Voter registration and absentee ballots require proof of US residency
- Credit card applications and loan documents will reject PO boxes, but will initially approve virtual mailbox addresses (but you will still need a residential address long term)
Setting up a virtual mailbox before you travel prevents gaps in service, missed renewals, and frozen accounts. Once you are overseas, opening a new mailbox becomes significantly harder because you often need to appear in person or provide notarized documents with a US-based identity verification process.
A pivotal point to heed is to plan to open the virtual mailbox and have all accounts mapped to that address for at least 3 to 6 months before leaving the country. This allows enough time for the processes and databases to “settle in” before you leave the country. The change of address will register with banks and provide time for you to acclimate to the processes, and most importantly, it allows time for any hiccups to pop up and be solved permanently before departure.
The scanning services are priceless. In 2017, I had my credit card skimmed and needed to cancel that credit card. Chase sent a new credit card to my virtual mailbox within 48 hours. The scanning service scanned my card information, which then allowed me to activate it online. Then, using the scanned front (credit card number) and back (security code) of my new card, I was able to continue booking flights and accommodation online. My trip continued despite the lost credit card, and without the hairy logistics of having it sent to Laos while on a motorbike adventure, hopping cities daily.
Unlike a PO box, a virtual mailbox gives you a physical street address. This distinction between a PO Box and a virtual mailbox with a street address matters most because most banks, government agencies, and business entities will not accept a PO Box as a valid mailing address. A virtual mailbox uses an actual street address with a unit or suite number, which passes basic verification at account opening for most institutions, though banks may flag it later (more on that below).
Also, the capability of holding or forwarding mail adds a layer of logistical capability to your life abroad, without relying on friends and family to sort and inform you of mail you receive. In my opinion, this is one of the most powerful benefits of a virtual mailbox. Whether I needed new clothing and boots sent from a favorite brand that doesn’t ship abroad, tax documents forwarded in timely fashion, or even working through the process of receiving and apostilling birth certificates, background checks for visa applications, and receiving a replacement driver’s license, the flexible, communicative nature added immense convenience and wildly decreased stress within my expat logistics.
The best states to establish your virtual mailbox depend on your tax situation and residency goals.
Where you set up your virtual mailbox matters, primarily because it can be the first step that leads to a new state domicile/residency, a better tax base, achieving tax residency in a state that has zero state income taxes, and could be a smart start for your LLC as a freelancer, solopreneur, or online small business owner.
Given tax benefits and LLC opportunities, these states are reputed as the best places to consider for residency (for you and your LLC), and starting a virtual mailbox there is a great start.
- Florida: No state income tax, easy residency establishment, large selection of providers, new “virtual residential address” services as well
- Texas: No state income tax, business-friendly laws, easy LLC setup, virtual boxes widely accepted for maintaining domicile purposes
- South Dakota: No state income tax, RV and full-time traveler-friendly residency rules
- Nevada: No state income tax, privacy-friendly corporate structures
- Delaware: Best for business entities and LLCs due to favorable corporate laws
- Wyoming: No state income tax, low-cost LLC filing, excellent for asset protection
Again, choosing a state should align with where you plan to claim residency for tax and legal purposes, so ensure the state you choose aligns with your plan now, and possible plans for the future. If you plan to maintain a driver’s license or voter registration, pick a state that allows you to use a CMRA address for those documents.
Steps to starting your virtual mailbox account
- Decide on the state that is best for you, based on taxes, your residency plans, driver’s license plans, and LLC plans.
- Choose a provider with a proven reputation among expats and nomads actively living abroad, not just stateside-based customers, and ideally with recent reviews.
- Select a plan based on mail volume and services needed, considering scanning, access to scanned mail archives, mail and package holding, mail and package forwarding, registered agent services, etc. Then screen for whether that provider fits your residency and LLC needs.
- Sign up on the virtual mailbox provider’s site.
- Complete USPS Form 1583 according to the provider’s instructions, which authorizes the mailbox service to receive mail on your behalf. This document will need to be notarized. If you’re abroad, you can use an online notary. I’ve used and recommend Notary Live, both for notary and Texas state apostille services.
- Submit two forms of ID, typically a government-issued photo ID and a secondary proof of identity.
- Wait for USPS approval, which can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.
- Receive your new address and start forwarding mail or updating institutions with your new details.
The entire process takes between one and three weeks depending on how quickly you complete notarization and submit your paperwork. Most providers walk you through every step, and some offer concierge onboarding to speed things up.
Limitations of virtual mailboxes that you need to know about before signing up: Not a residential address
Virtual mailboxes are not considered residential addresses by most banks and financial institutions. I found this out the hard way when my bank informed me that I needed to add a residential address and my virtual address didn’t qualify. I ignored their message, after which they then threatened to unilaterally close my account and send a check for the balance to my address listed (my virtual mailbox) if I didn’t provide the information in a week. The surprise in this was that I’d been traveling abroad continuously for 18 months, and it took them that long to drop the hammer and enforce the rule.
The point of this is, do not assume that because your banks don’t flag your virtual address immediately that you’ve gotten away with it. It will catch up to you, so plan for it, and just be ready with a complementary residential address from the start. Or, just set up a proper residential address from the start. Some banks will even reject virtual mailbox addresses entirely for new account openings.
The virtual address will work perfectly fine for receiving correspondence and account statements, but many banks will flag it as a commercial address and will likely eventually restrict certain account features or require additional verification, possibly even shutting down your account, just as they threatened to with mine. I’ve seen this happen to several friends as well. This process, of identifying that you are using a virtual address and then reacting, can take a year or more.
The IRS and most state tax agencies accept virtual mailbox addresses for tax filing. I’ve used my virtual addresses consistently with government agencies since I left. However, establishing legal domicile or residency often requires time at a real address, according to the state’s residency guidelines, and additional proof such as a lease, utility bills, or voter registration in that state. A virtual mailbox alone will not prove you live in a state for residency purposes. The virtual address I currently use and past virtual addresses I used that maintained my state residency were established after living in the state long enough to get a local driver’s license and vote. So, plan on the likely scenario for using the virtual address for state domicile, being that it must bridge off of an address you actually lived at in the state, legitimately establishing residency in the process.
While there are few clean options for navigating the US residency address issue while being an expat or nomad abroad, the best option for residential addresses is using the address of a family member or trusted friend. From years of experience, this is mostly a non-issue for all parties, as long as your virtual address is consistently listed as your mailing address. If your virtual mailbox address is properly listed as your mailing address, your supportive friend or family will never actually receive any mail at their address and thus experience no inconvenience either.
Secondarily, services like Your Tax Base and SavvyNomad now tout the ability to establish a residency address in Florida. However, I have not personally vetted these services, and am only listing them as potential options. If you have successfully (or unsuccessfully) used these services to establish or maintain a residential address in the US, please let me know your experience. You can read more in the list of residential address services at the end of this article.
Certain government services, including some DMV offices and passport applications, may require proof of physical residency beyond just a mailing address, and this varies state by state. For instance, many have reported that Florida makes it easy, while California makes it impossible to use the virtual mailbox for its bureaucratic processes. Always confirm with the specific agency before assuming your virtual mailbox will satisfy their requirements.
Package forwarding can become expensive quickly, partly due to shipping fees, but often due to customs fees; however, this is dependent on the country. For instance, in Thailand, I’ve received packages via normal snail mail for barely above US costs and no surprise customs fees. On the other hand, packages I received in Indonesia nearly always required additional customs fees equal to the value of the package, in addition to the $100 to $300 fees for DHL shipping, making a pair of shoes cost $300 to $400 all in.
Keep in mind, fees beyond the initial postage will pop up as surprises on arrival, so just be prepared. While most virtual address services include mail scanning in their base plans, forwarding physical packages internationally can cost significantly more than the monthly subscription fee, largely due to the international DHL/FedEx/UPS fees and their insistence that you can’t use the cheapest tier, to avoid the package being lost and creating a customer service headache they have to deal with. The smart move is to calculate your expected re-shipping fees before ordering anything, and check expat forums in your country for customs fees and surprises.

TOP VIRTUAL MAILBOX PROVIDERS FOR EXPATS AND NOMADS
While there are several reputable virtual mailbox providers, and I have used three separate providers myself, which all delivered a great experience, in full disclosure, I have not tested all options on this list. However, the needs of each reader, such as box location, scan services, package forwarding services, registered agent services, and residency support, will be unique enough that even though my providers solved my flexpat mail issues with amazing customer support, they may not be right for your logistical needs – and I want you to be aware of all options available.
As such, these 14 providers represent the best options for expats and digital nomads who need a reliable US mailing address while living abroad, based on publicly available track records (user reviews on forums, business track record), my brief interaction with their customer support, and my understanding of what adds up to a good virtual mailbox service for an American abroad.
Beyond user reviews, each service has been evaluated based on location availability, pricing, features, customer support, and suitability for long-term international use.

Anytime Mailbox: Stateside and global addresses
Anytime Mailbox operates over 2,100 locations across all 50 states, giving you more address options than any other provider in this list except iPostal1. The sheer number of locations means you can pick a specific city or zip code that aligns with your residency strategy, business needs, or personal preferences.
Additionally, this was the provider that I purchased an additional Bangkok virtual address with, and a stateside virtual address for easy package receiving and pickup near my US hub airport choice of the moment. The Bangkok address allows me to receive packages whenever I’m in Asia. The stateside address allows me to pass through my choice airport, Uber over to pick up my packages, and then fly onward.
States with the most locations: California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Nevada lead the list, but nearly every mid-sized city in the country has at least one Anytime Mailbox location. You can filter by state, city, and even specific zip codes to find the perfect address.
Pricing starts at $9.99 per month for basic mail scanning with 20 pieces of mail included. Mid-tier plans range from $15 to $30 per month and include more mail pieces, check deposit services, and longer storage times. Premium plans with unlimited mail scanning and advanced forwarding options run between $40 and $60 per month depending on location.
What Anytime Mailbox offers:
- Mail and package scanning with high-resolution images
- Mail forwarding to any international address
- Package consolidation to reduce shipping costs
- Check deposit services that scan and deposit checks directly into your bank account
- Shredding and recycling for unwanted mail
- 24/7 online portal access with mobile app support
What they lack: Anytime Mailbox does not offer in-house registered agent services. If you need a registered agent for your LLC or corporation, you will need to purchase that separately through a third-party provider. Additionally, some franchise locations have inconsistent customer service quality, so it is worth reading reviews for the specific location you plan to use.
Registered agent services: Not available directly, but many locations partner with third-party registered agent providers who can bundle services for an additional fee. If you need a registered agent for your LLC, I recommend first checking virtual mailbox providers that offer that service as integrated first, and then only choose Anytime Mailbox if their other services or location uniquely suit your needs and situation.
Best for: Expats and nomads who want maximum flexibility in choosing their address and need a budget-friendly option with solid core features. Anytime Mailbox works particularly well for people who want an address in a specific city or state for tax or business reasons.

US Global Mail
US Global Mail focuses on serving expats, digital nomads, and international travelers, which means their entire platform is designed around the unique challenges of managing mail from abroad. Their customer support team understands visa issues, international shipping logistics, and the nuances of maintaining US residency while living overseas.
Locations: US Global Mail operates in Houston, Texas only, a popular state for expats due to its lack of state income tax and favorable residency laws. They do not offer the wide geographic spread of Anytime Mailbox, but their location is strategically chosen for maximum tax and legal benefits.
Pricing starts at $49 per month for the Scale plan, listed at $49 and $65 depending on billing term (the exact price varies by address), which includes 360 opened-and-scanned envelopes a year, unlimited exterior scans, 30 days of free mail storage, and 180 days of digital scan storage. The Teams plan runs $99 to $129 per month with 1,200 scanned envelopes a year and team roles and permissions.
What they offer:
- Unlimited exterior scans, with extra interior scans at $3 each beyond your plan allowance
- Mobile check deposit with same-day processing
- Discounted international shipping rates through partnerships with DHL and FedEx
- Package consolidation that combines multiple packages into a single shipment
- Free storage for up to 30 days on most plans
- Dedicated account managers for premium plan customers
What they lack: Limited geographic reach means you cannot choose addresses outside of Houston, Texas. If you need an address in a specific state for business or residency purposes, or near your US hub in an alternate location for easy pickup, US Global Mail may not work for you. They also do not provide registered agent services directly, so the same recommendation applies: if you do have a US LLC, you need registered agent services; then screen virtual mailbox service providers that integrate registered agent services first.
Registered agent services: Not available in-house, but they can connect you with trusted third-party providers who specialize in serving expats and nomads.
Best for: Expats who want a service built specifically for international use and who are comfortable establishing residency in Texas. US Global Mail excels at handling the logistics of international forwarding and works particularly well for full-time travelers who need reliable mail management without constant oversight.

Physical Address: Budget-friendly virtual addresses with in-house locations
PhysicalAddress.com is a cloud-based virtual mailbox that has served customers since 2013, with clients in more than 50 countries. It sells both personal and business virtual addresses, and it operates its locations itself rather than relying on third-party mail centers, which cuts down on the franchise inconsistency you see at some other providers.
Locations: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Idaho, Georgia, Nevada, and Delaware. Florida and Texas give you tax-free state options, and Delaware and Nevada suit business formation.
Pricing starts at $7.98 per month, the lowest advertised starting price on this list. The site lists no sign-up fees, no contracts, cancel anytime, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Higher tiers and location pricing are on its Pricing & Locations page.
What they offer:
- Mail viewing, scanning, forwarding, storage, and shredding through web, iOS, and Android
- International shipping
- Virtual PO Box option
- Multi-user admin console
- Phone support seven days a week
What they lack: The site does not market to expats specifically, and it does not describe a residential-address or domicile product. Reviewers report that USPS Form 1583 identity verification costs extra and that each additional recipient needs a separate paid verification (about $20 each through Proof.com in one 1-star review). Several reviewers also say state mail arrived slower than expected. Their location network is smaller than Anytime Mailbox or iPostal1.
Registered agent services: The site lists a free registered agent service with an account. It does not show state coverage or details, so confirm which states before you rely on it.
Best for: Budget-conscious expats and nomads who want a lower monthly cost and a company-run address in Florida, Texas, Nevada, or Delaware. Third-party reputation is strong: 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 1,914 reviews.

PostScan Mail
PostScan Mail operates over 1,000 addresses in 31 states plus Washington, DC, Canada, and Mexico, with a heavy concentration in major metropolitan areas. Their platform emphasizes automation, security, and ease of use, making it one of the most tech-forward options in the virtual mailbox space.
States with locations: California, Florida, Texas, New York, Nevada, Washington, Illinois, and Arizona have the most PostScan Mail addresses. They also have locations in Delaware and Wyoming, which are popular for business formations and LLCs.
Pricing starts as low as $10 per month ($8.33 per month billed annually) for the Starter plan, which includes 30 mail items a month. Standard is as low as $20 per month (60 items) and Premium as low as $30 per month (120 items). Business plans start at $100 per month and add features like team access, API integrations, and white-label options.
What they offer:
- Real-time mail notifications via email and SMS
- Advanced mail filtering and automatic sorting based on sender
- Check deposit with mobile capture and same-day processing
- Package consolidation and repackaging to reduce shipping costs
- Certified mail and signature services for legal documents
- Multi-user access for families or business teams
What they lack: Their customer support can be slow to respond during peak times. Some users report that mail scanning can take 24 to 48 hours during busy periods, which may be frustrating if you need immediate access to time-sensitive documents.
Registered agent services: Yes, offered in-house.
Best for: Tech-savvy expats and nomads who want advanced automation, filtering, and integrations. PostScan Mail works particularly well for small business owners who need team access and API capabilities to integrate mail management into their existing workflows.

iPostal1
iPostal1 operates over 4,250+ locations across the United States and abroad, giving you the widest selection of addresses available from any virtual mailbox provider. The sheer number of locations means you can find an address in nearly any city, zip code, or neighborhood you need for residency, business, or personal reasons.
States with locations: Every state in the US has multiple iPostal1 locations, with the highest concentration in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. You can filter by state, city, and zip code to find the exact address that fits your needs.
Pricing starts at $9.99 per month for their most basic plan, which includes limited mail scanning and storage. Mid-tier plans range from $19.99 to $39.99 per month and include higher mail volume, check deposit, and package forwarding. Premium plans with unlimited mail scanning and advanced features run between $49.99 and $99.99 per month depending on location and services.
What they offer:
- Mail and package scanning with high-resolution images
- Instant mail forwarding to domestic and international addresses
- Package consolidation and repackaging services
- Check deposit with mobile capture
- Shredding, recycling, and secure document disposal
- 24/7 access to online portal and mobile app
What iPostal1 lacks: Because iPostal1 operates through a franchise model, the quality of service can vary significantly between locations. Some franchises offer excellent customer support and fast scanning times, while others have slow response times and inconsistent service quality. It is critical to read reviews for the specific location you plan to use before signing up.
Registered agent services: Yes, as a $99 a year add-on to a business plan in 24 states plus DC.
Best for: Expats and nomads who need an address in a very specific location and want maximum flexibility in choosing their exact street address. iPostal1 works particularly well for people who need to maintain residency in a specific city or zip code for tax, legal, or personal reasons.
LegalZoom Virtual Mail (formerly Earth Class Mail): Business-grade mail automation
Earth Class Mail launched in 2004 as one of the first digital mail platforms, and LegalZoom acquired it. It now operates as LegalZoom Virtual Mail. This option is built for business owners who want to manage mail as a workflow, and it is tied into LegalZoom’s company formation services.
Locations: 53 street addresses in 44 states and Washington, DC, including Park Avenue in New York and Market Street in San Francisco.
Pricing starts at $39 per month for the Starter plan, which includes 2 recipients and 5 digitized items. Essentials is $59 (5 recipients, 25 items), Premium is $119 (20 recipients, 50 items), and higher plans run $179 and $299 (unlimited recipients, 100 to 250 items). Plans are billed monthly and auto-renew. All plans include unlimited cloud storage for scanned mail, AI summaries and categorization, and API integrations.
What LegalZoom Virtual Mail offers:
- Free scanning up to your plan’s item limit, with documents of 20 pages or fewer carrying no extra charge
- AI summaries and categorization of every digitized item
- Check deposit by mail to your bank, 5 checks included on the entry plan
- Package and mail forwarding, $5 per shipment plus postage for international
- Free secure shredding
- Team access for multiple recipients
- API integrations and tie-ins with LegalZoom business formation, including Secretary of State status reports
What they lack: The price is a problem, as this option clearly isn’t the affordable one. A heavy-mail expat on the entry plan will pay overage fees fast, and storage is short: 30 days for letters and 10 days for packages, then $1.50 a month per letter or $15 a pound per month for packages. Check deposit is mailed, not mobile-captured. Packages over 20 pounds are not accepted. Third-party reviews of the older Earth Class Mail platform were mixed, with Stable citing a G2 rating of 3.3 out of 5.
Registered agent services: Not confirmed. LegalZoom says a virtual address does not replace a registered agent and does not say whether it provides one, so ask before relying on it.
Best for: Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and remote teams that need automation and integrations, and that may want to form an LLC through LegalZoom. It is overbuilt and overpriced for an individual expat who only needs a mailing address.

Northwest Registered Agent
Northwest Registered Agent is primarily a registered agent service for LLCs and corporations, but they also offer virtual mailbox services bundled with their business formation and compliance packages. If you are thinking foremost about your US LLC and need both a virtual mailbox and a registered agent, Northwest provides integrated solutions.
Locations: Northwest Registered Agent operates in all 50 states, but their virtual mailbox services (and the actual addresses) are only available in a limited number of locations, primarily in states popular for business formations like Delaware, Wyoming, Nevada, and New Mexico.
Pricing starts at $29 per month for their basic virtual mailbox plan, which includes mail scanning, forwarding, and 30 days of storage. When bundled with their registered agent service, the combined cost ranges from $125 to $300 per year depending on the state and services selected.
What they offer:
- Mail scanning and forwarding as part of a registered agent package
- Legal document handling and compliance reminders
- Business formation services including LLC filing and operating agreements
- Annual report filing and state compliance management
- Privacy protection for business owners who do not want their personal address on public records
What they lack: Northwest Registered Agent is not designed for high-volume mail management or consumer use for your average expat or nomad. If you need extensive mail scanning, package forwarding, or check deposit services, a dedicated virtual mailbox provider will serve you better. If you are just looking for a consistent address to receive mail as you travel, this isn’t the best option. Their platform also lacks advanced automation and integrations.
Registered agent services: Yes, this is their core business. They provide registered agent services in all 50 states, and their virtual mailbox offering is designed to complement their compliance and business formation services.
Best for: Expats and nomads who need both a virtual mailbox and a registered agent for their LLC or corporation. Northwest Registered Agent works particularly well for business owners who want a single provider to handle both their mail and their legal compliance needs.

Pricing starts at $9.95 per month for their basic plan, which includes 20 scanned mail pieces, 30 days of storage, and standard forwarding. Mid-tier plans range from $14.95 to $24.95 per month and include higher mail volume, check deposit, and package consolidation.

Registered agent services: Yes, free with mailbox plans in California, Delaware, Florida, Nevada, and Texas.
Best for: Budget-conscious expats and nomads who need basic mail scanning and forwarding without advanced features. VirtualPostMail works particularly well for people who receive low to moderate mail volume and want to keep costs as low as possible.

PostNet
PostNet operates over 650 locations across the United States and focuses on providing business services alongside virtual mailbox offerings. Their locations often double as print shops, shipping centers, and business service hubs, giving you access to additional resources beyond just mail management.
States with locations: PostNet has locations in most states, with the highest concentration in Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Colorado. You can filter by city and zip code to find a location that fits your needs.
Pricing starts at $15 per month for their basic plan, which includes mail scanning, forwarding, and 30 days of storage. Mid-tier plans range from $25 to $45 per month and include higher mail volume, package handling, and access to in-person services at their physical locations.
What they offer:
- Mail and package scanning with digital delivery
- Access to in-person services including printing, copying, and faxing
- Package forwarding and consolidation
- Notary services available at most locations
- Check deposit and shredding services
- Local pickup option if you are in the area
What they lack: PostNet operates through a franchise model, which means each site is independently operated and service quality reportedly varies significantly by location. Some franchises are excellent, while others have slow response times and inconsistent mail scanning. To be sure you’re not signing up for a problem, dig through the reviews for your specific location as far back as they go. PostNet does not offer registered agent services or advanced automation features.
Registered agent services: Not available.
Best for: Expats and nomads who want access to in-person business services alongside their virtual mailbox. PostNet works particularly well for people who occasionally need printing, notary, or shipping services and want a one-stop shop for all their business needs. If you plan to return to the US frequently for package pickup and will likely handle paperwork along the way, this is an option to consider after vetting the location.

Virtual Office NYC
Virtual Office NYC specializes in providing New York City addresses for businesses and individuals who need a prestigious Manhattan location for credibility, branding, or legal purposes. While they serve other cities, their primary focus is on New York, making them the top choice for anyone who specifically needs a NYC address. This option is better for remote businesses with a business reason that aligns with presenting NYC as a base.
Locations: New York City with addresses in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. They also have limited locations in other major cities, but their strength lies in their NYC presence.
Pricing starts at $49 per month for their basic plan, which includes mail scanning, forwarding, and a professional business address. Higher-tier plans range from $99 to $299 per month and add features like dedicated phone numbers, call answering services, and access to co-working spaces.
What they offer:
- Premium Manhattan business addresses for credibility and branding
- Mail and package scanning with same-day processing
- Call answering and virtual receptionist services
- Access to co-working spaces and meeting rooms on higher-tier plans
- Business phone numbers with call forwarding
- Package forwarding and consolidation
What they lack: Virtual Office NYC is significantly more expensive than other providers, and their services are tailored toward businesses rather than individual expats. If you do not need a New York address specifically, you will find better value elsewhere. They do not offer registered agent services directly.
Registered agent services: Not available in-house, but they partner with third-party registered agent providers who can bundle services for an additional fee.
Best for: Entrepreneurs, consultants, and business owners who need a prestigious New York City address for branding, credibility, or client-facing purposes. Virtual Office NYC works particularly well for people who want to project a professional image tied to a specific high-status location.

DakotaPost
DakotaPost operates exclusively in South Dakota and focuses on serving full-time travelers, RVers, and expats who want to establish South Dakota residency. Their entire business model is built around helping people navigate South Dakota’s residency requirements, making them one of the most specialized providers on this list.
Locations: South Dakota only, with addresses available in Box Elder and Rapid City. If you need an address in any other state, DakotaPost will not work for you.
Pricing starts at $12.95 per month for their basic plan, which includes mail scanning, forwarding, and storage. They also offer residency packages that bundle mail service with DMV assistance, notary services, and documentation help for an additional fee.
What DakotaPost offers:
- Mail scanning and forwarding with priority processing
- Residency assistance including driver’s license and vehicle registration help
- Notary services for required forms and documents
- Package forwarding and consolidation
- Check deposit services
- Local pickup available if you are passing through South Dakota
What DakotaPost lacks: Limited to South Dakota only, so there is no geographic flexibility. They do not offer advanced features like API integrations, team access, or automated workflows. Customer support is limited to email and phone during business hours.
Registered agent services: Not available.
Best for: Full-time RVers, travelers, and expats who want to establish South Dakota residency and need help navigating the DMV and documentation process. DakotaPost excels at providing hands-on support for people who are unfamiliar with South Dakota’s residency requirements.

Americas Mailbox
Americas Mailbox is one of the oldest and most established virtual mailbox providers focused exclusively on South Dakota residency. They have been serving full-time travelers and expats since 2001, giving them decades of experience helping people establish and maintain South Dakota residency while living on the road or abroad.
Locations: South Dakota only, with addresses in Box Elder near Rapid City. If you need an address outside of South Dakota, Americas Mailbox will not work for you.
Pricing is billed annually ($169.99 to $249.99), plus a one-time $25 startup fee. The entry Bronze plan covers a basic address, vehicle registration, and up to seven pieces of mail. Their residency support bundles driver’s license assistance, vehicle registration help, and notary services with the mail service.
What they offer:
- Mail scanning and forwarding with fast turnaround times
- Comprehensive residency assistance for South Dakota driver’s licenses and vehicle registration
- Notary services for all required forms
- Package forwarding and consolidation
- Check deposit services
- In-person support if you visit their Box Elder location
What they lack: Limited to South Dakota only, which eliminates geographic flexibility. They do not offer advanced features like API integrations or team access. Their customer support is excellent for residency-related questions but limited for other needs.
Registered agent services: Available on the Platinum and Titanium Plus plans.
Best for: Full-time travelers, RVers, and expats who want to establish South Dakota residency and prefer working with an experienced provider who specializes exclusively in that state. Americas Mailbox works particularly well for people who value long-term stability and hands-on residency support.

MyRVMail
MyRVMail is Florida-only and was designed specifically for full-time RVers and travelers, making it one of the most niche-focused virtual mailbox providers on this list. Their platform is built around the unique needs of people who live on the road, and their customer support team understands the challenges of managing mail while constantly moving.
Locations: MyRVMail operates only in Florida, a state with no income tax and RV-friendly residency laws. They focus exclusively on Florida because it is one of the most popular choices for full-time travelers.
Pricing starts at $22.41 per month for the Premium plan with a Passport America membership or military ID ($24.90 without one). The Business plan is $39.95 per month, and yearly billing is $224.10 for Premium and $399.50 for Business.
What MyRVMail offers:
- Mail scanning and forwarding with priority processing for urgent items
- Package consolidation and repackaging to reduce shipping costs
- Check deposit with mobile capture
- Discounted forwarding rates for customers who move frequently
- RV-specific resources including state residency guides and DMV checklists
- Customer support from a team that understands full-time travel challenges
What MyRVMail lacks: Limited to Florida, so there is no option for addresses in other states. They do not offer advanced features like API integrations or team access. Their platform is basic compared to business-focused providers.
Registered agent services: Not available.
Best for: Full-time RVers and travelers who want a provider that understands their lifestyle and offers resources tailored to their needs. MyRVMail works particularly well for people who move frequently and need flexible forwarding options without complex contracts or commitments.

St. Brendan’s Isle (SBI)
St. Brendan’s Isle operates exclusively in Florida and positions itself as a premium virtual mailbox provider for expats, retirees, and snowbirds who want a Florida address for tax and residency purposes. They focus on providing high-touch customer service and personalized support, making them one of the more boutique options on this list.
Locations: Florida only, with its facility in Green Cove Springs, in Clay County south of Jacksonville. If you need an address outside of Florida, St. Brendan’s Isle will not work for you.
Pricing starts at $13.99 per month for the Travelers Special mail forwarding plan, and the Cruiser Home Port plan is $15.99. Mail scanning is an add-on at $7.99 per month for normal volume or $15.99 for high volume. A custom mail service starts at $29.99.
What they offer:
- Mail scanning and forwarding with personalized attention
- Concierge services for customers who need help with Florida residency documentation
- Package forwarding and consolidation
- Check deposit with mobile capture
- High-touch customer service with dedicated account support
- Assistance with Florida driver’s license and voter registration applications
What they lack: Limited to Florida only, which eliminates geographic flexibility. Higher pricing compared to budget providers makes it less ideal for cost-conscious expats. They do not offer advanced features like API integrations or team access.
Registered agent services: Not available.
Best for: Expats, retirees, and snowbirds who want to establish Florida residency and prefer working with a boutique provider that offers personalized support. St. Brendan’s Isle works particularly well for people who value high-touch customer service and are willing to pay a premium for it.

TACKLING THE RESIDENCY AND RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS PROBLEM
While the list of virtual mailbox services above will undoubtedly have a solid solution for your problem of receiving mail while abroad, establishing, changing, and maintaining a residential address and state residency is a different problem.
As stated above, virtual mailboxes are great mailing addresses, but ultimately the receivers, and the address you receive, are commercial addresses. If you want to maintain your bank account, driver’s license, and a slew of other issues, you will need a residential address.
Whether you don’t have a close friend or family to trust that will let you use their address, or you need to reestablish state residency in a better state for tax ease and bureaucracy ease (driver’s license renewal), the emerging virtual residential address services might be the solution.
While virtual residential address services are less plentiful and less developed than virtual mailbox services, luckily, there are still options available.

Your Tax Base: Florida domicile with a residential address
Your Tax Base is a St. Petersburg, Florida-based service that combines a residential street address with the paperwork needed to establish Florida domicile. It targets Americans living abroad who want a US home base for banking, voting, mail, and taxes.
Locations: Florida only. The address is a real residential street address in a Florida residential community, not a PO Box or commercial mailbox, and it should appear as a standard home address if anyone checks.
Pricing starts at $55 per month, billed annually. Optional extras are a $35 online notarization for Form 1583 and, on the Premium tier, a $500 lease agreement fee if you request one. State fees for licenses and registrations are separate. You can cancel any time from the dashboard, and mail forwarding continues for 30 days after service ends.
What Your Tax Base offers:
- Residential address that activates 2 to 5 business days after your notarized Form 1583 is accepted
- Preparation of the Declaration of Domicile with county-specific filing instructions
- Mail scanned on every plan, typically within 24 to 48 hours, and forwarding to more than 200 countries on higher plans
- Package forwarding and consolidation
- Guidance on updating your driver’s license, voter registration, and vehicle registration
- Referrals to expat-specialist CPAs
- A Tax Guardian plan that includes Florida registered agent service for one LLC or corporation
What they lack: You must make one in-person trip to Florida to get a driver’s license, and you need a Declaration of Domicile and Florida voter registration. No annual visits are needed after setup. Note that the address does not change your FATCA or FBAR obligations, and Florida residency does not affect Foreign Earned Income Exclusion eligibility. If you are leaving a “sticky” state such as California, New York, New Mexico, South Carolina, or Virginia, that state may still claim you as a resident, so review not only the entry side (becoming Florida domiciled) but the exit side (leaving California and ensuring you’re not tax liable). A reviewer on Trustpilot reported that the Social Security Administration’s system rejected an address with a unit number. The company start date is not stated on its site, and a co-founder reportedly began helping clients with Florida domicile around 2022.
Registered agent services: Included for one LLC or corporation on the Tax Guardian plan.
Best for: Americans abroad who are leaving a high-tax state, are ready to fully sever ties with a high-tax state, or want a residential address with step-by-step domicile support. Third-party reputation is strong: 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 64 reviews. The company’s own site claims 4.97 from 358 reviews, and Trustpilot notes the company has not recently invited reviews, so treat the score as a good sign, not proof, and don’t trust the offerings fully until you’ve verified.

SavvyNomad: Non-commercial residential addresses for Florida and Texas
SavvyNomad sells three levels of US addresses, from a regular mailbox to a premium residential address, and it is built around Americans who live abroad or travel full time. Its selling point is that the residential address is a “true place of abode” and not a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA), which matters for banks and licensing offices that screen out mailbox addresses.
Locations: Florida, with a residential street address in an RV and manufactured-home community in Brandon, FL, and a Texas address in Rockport. Texas plans are limited to US citizens and Green Card holders.
Pricing: $60 per month (Basic Domicile), $90 per month, and $265 per month (Premium, Florida only), all billed annually.
What they offer:
- Three tiers: regular mailbox, Basic Residential Address, and Premium Address
- Basic and Premium are listed as suitable for banking, legal purposes, and a Florida driver’s license, with proof of address included.
- Premium targets stricter services such as Robinhood and Mercury, with a dedicated address and utility bill
- Mail and package forwarding that varies by tier, with essential mail only on Basic
- Support for absentee voter registration from abroad, if you are eligible
What they lack: Acceptance is at each institution’s discretion and is not guaranteed. The regular mailbox tier is not suitable for banking, legal, or license use, and is more akin to a virtual mailbox than a residential address. A major downside is that, at this time, there are no available independent reviews.
Registered agent services: The Florida SavvyNomad and Premium plans include a registered agent for one LLC.
Best for: Americans abroad who need a non-CMRA address (residential address) to keep bank and brokerage accounts open and want a lower entry price than the premium tier. If you consider this option, approach it as unproven until independent reviews are available.

NomadPilot: Newer Florida domicile service with a lease option
NomadPilot is a Florida domicile service for expats and digital nomads. It bundles a residential address with Florida domicile filing, mail forwarding, health insurance guidance, and a tax calculator, and it is the newest and least proven service in this group, apparently launched in 2025 (its site shows a 2025 copyright).
Locations: Florida only. The address is described as a residential address at an RV community, usable for legal and financial purposes.
Pricing: Three plans. Starter Domicile is $50 per month, Nomad in a Box is $85, and Platinum Nomad is $275, shown as discounted rates on yearly or quarterly billing. The page is inconsistent: another version lists $60, $95, and $295 per month, with $60 shown as the standard Starter price.
What they offer:
- Automatic Florida domicile filing and guided help with residence setup, vehicle registration, and driver’s license
- Starter includes a mailbox for required mail only
- Nomad in a Box adds a second family member, full mail and package forwarding, and registered agent service for one LLC or corporation.
- Platinum adds a premium Florida home address with privacy, plus a utility bill in your name.
- An official residential lease agreement for a one-time $500 fee, by request with limited availability
- Concierge help with travel research, visa applications, and health insurance comparisons.
- Tax services through NomadLedger, which it says are provided by independent licensed CPAs and Enrolled Agents
What they lack: The lease and utility bill are by request, and availability is limited. Starter does not forward all mail. As another newer service, there are no customer reviews or ratings available, neither on the site nor from independent reviewers.
Registered agent services: Included for one LLC or corporation on Nomad in a Box and higher.
Best for: Nomads who need a lease and utility bill to satisfy strict verification, and who are comfortable with a young company. I would list it as an option you have not vetted and ask readers to report their experience.

Escapees Mail Service: The oldest name in domicile mail, with Texas, Florida, and South Dakota options
Escapees began as an RV newsletter in 1978, and its mail service started in 1985 and is described as the oldest private mail forwarding operation of its kind in the US. Membership in the Escapees RV Club was acquired by Harvest Hosts in July 2024, while the mail service operates separately. It is built for full-time RVers, but its service and its domicile guides are useful to nomads and expats.
Locations: The main address is in Livingston, Texas. Florida and South Dakota are listed as domicile and residency options, but the site’s FAQ says these are satellite stations that cannot process sign-ups, so you will likely have to enroll through Texas first.
Pricing: Category A (all mail types) is $125 per year, Category B is $145, and Category C (custom sorting) is $175. Business mail accounts are $175. Mail scanning, on B and C only, is $10 per month or $100 per year. A $50 enrollment fee is waived during the current promotion. Escapees RV Club membership of $49.95 per year is required. The site’s FAQ shows “$110 to $150” per year, which conflicts with the homepage, so confirm the price.
What they offer:
- A real street address rather than a PO Box
- Mail forwarding and optional scanning
- Domicile guides for South Dakota, Texas, and Florida
- An optional “Escapees: Home” benefit that uses the Box Elder satellite center as a physical address for state documents such as a driver’s license, voter registration, and vehicle registration, intended for full-time RVers who have sold their homes
- Temporary accounts: $40 for 2 months, up to $70 for 6 months
- Decades of member education, including seminars and an RV community
What they lack: A Texas driver’s license issued with this address shows a PMB designation, which some banks flag. New South Dakota residents cannot register to vote using the Escapees address alone and need a separate physical address such as an RV park in Pennington County. You must appear in person for a South Dakota license and surrender your old one, and register your vehicle within 90 days. Scanning is an add-on and not in the cheapest category. Expat-specific support is thin.
Registered agent services: Not mentioned on its site.
Best for: Travelers who want a long track record backed provider, and who plan to visit their domicile state in person.

Americas Mailbox: South Dakota residency for travelers and expats
Americas Mailbox is a family-run service in Box Elder, South Dakota, built entirely around South Dakota residency, mail forwarding, and vehicle registration. Reputed as one of the most reliable and well-established options for full-time RVers.
Locations: South Dakota only. The office is at 514 Americas Way, Box Elder, SD 57719, near Rapid City, and it has an on-site RV park, campground, and hotel.
Pricing is annual, not monthly: Bronze $169.99 per year, Silver $189.99, Gold $209.99, Platinum from $249.99, and Titanium Plus from $248.99. Every plan has a one-time $25 startup fee and a suggested postage fund of $100 to $500 depending on the plan. Prices are before tax. Quarterly plans for part-time RVers are also available.
What they offer:
- A South Dakota street address, with sign-up possible from anywhere by mail, fax, or email
- A dedicated residency page and walk-through for a South Dakota driver’s license, voter registration, and vehicle registration
- Vehicle registration paperwork handled under power of attorney
- Mail forwarding on all plans, with Silver and above forwarding most packages
- Mail and exterior package scanning on Titanium plans
- Junk-mail filtering and encrypted access on Gold
- In-person support if you visit Box Elder
What they lack: Basic plans do not include digital mail scanning, which many competitors do. To maintain domicile, you must visit South Dakota at least once every five years for one overnight stay, and you must appear in person for the license. Certain permits, such as pistol permits, require a 30-day stay. A reviewer noted occasional mail-handling delays or mix-ups, which she called rare.
Registered agent services: Available on the Platinum and Titanium Plus plans.
Best for: Full-time travelers, RVers, and expats who want South Dakota residency with hands-on help and who value a long-standing provider. South Dakota has no state income tax.

Virtual mailboxes give you the freedom to live anywhere in the world while maintaining a permanent US presence. The right provider depends on your residency goals, mail volume, budget, and whether you need additional services like registered agent support or residency assistance.
For most expats and nomads, a provider with locations in Florida, Texas, or South Dakota offers the best combination of tax benefits, residency flexibility, and service quality. If you run a business, choose a provider that offers registered agent services or integrates with your accounting and compliance tools. If you prioritize simplicity and low cost, a basic provider with solid mail scanning and forwarding will meet your needs without unnecessary complexity.
