What if the next great nation had no borders, no government, and no fixed land—just a shared identity and global movement?

Imagine a world in which borders dissolved, making way for a life in which the beautiful beaches of Bali were a short walk away from the old-world architecture and cafes of Paris as a stop on the way to the Tango Milangas and barbecue asados of Buenos Aires. Now, imagine that this traveler’s Pangea was your life. Imagine yourself as a citizen of a nation that stretches the expanse of the globe, crafting a life with puzzle pieces of experiences that fell into place to create the life of your dreams. Now, don’t imagine because this is the reality of 35 million unknowing citizens of the Digital Nomad Nation.

Unknown to the world, a new nation started by a prediction 27 years ago has risen, spanning the globe and spilling from the internet as the first digital nation born of the internet. Without realizing it, these individual “digital nomads” as part of the “Digital Nomad Nation” are disrupting paradigms and redefining work, life, and statehood in the digital age.

In 2022, after 5 years of traveling the world as a digital nomad, I decided to search for a clear answer to the question, “Who are digital nomads? What do they do? Where do they go?” The answer to those questions, which came after interviewing and surveying hundreds of digital nomads around the world, went deeper than I could have imagined, with a story that stretches back 25 years and foretells a revolutionary 25 years to come. But this is the first chapter of that story I passionately share in this book, Digital Nomad Nation: The Rise of a Borderless Generation.

Part sociological deep dive, part travel memoir, and part manifesto for a new way of living, Digital Nomad Nation explores the rise of a borderless generation redefining work, community, and nationhood—and how they may become the world’s first digital country.

Driven by findings from the 2022 Global Digital Nomad Study research, hundreds of interviews and surveys of digital nomads on the road and investigating in dozens of cities over 7 years and 60+ countries traveled as a digital nomad.

This book digs deeply into a population breaking the old rules in work, life, travel, and citizenship and presents them engagingly, dissecting a major cultural shift in progress in the vein of Malcolm Gladwell meets digital nomadism—a sociological deep dive rather than a “how-to” book.

Digital Nomad Nation is to the future of work what Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers was to success—an eye-opening examination of the hidden forces shaping modern nomadism, combining research, storytelling, and social analysis to reveal how technology, economics, and culture are redefining what it means to live and work in the digital age.

With breadth and depth, the telling of this story aims not only to inspire aspiring nomads and awaken current nomads and remote workers to the movement they’re unknowingly participating in and its untapped potential but also shares a novel perspective of digital nomads with sociologists, policymakers, and companies that has not been addressed since Makimoto’s pioneering book in 1997.

    Chapter Overviews

CHAPTER 1: Why Are Digital Nomads Everywhere? (Overview)

Chapter 1 explores the rapid rise of digital nomadism, tracing its roots from a niche lifestyle to a global movement. It examines the socio-economic forces that have driven millions to embrace remote work and location independence—rising costs of living, wage stagnation, and the decline of traditional career stability. The chapter also highlights the deeper psychological pull of nomadism, from the loss of free-spirited travel routes like the Hippie Trail to the innate human urge to roam. Ultimately, it argues that digital nomadism is more than just a trend—it is a response to modern societal constraints, offering freedom, fulfillment, and a redefined sense of belonging.

CHAPTER 2: What is a digital nomad? (Overview)

Chapter 2 defines the modern digital nomad, dispelling common stereotypes and highlighting the diversity within this growing community. While media often portrays digital nomads as young, single, and tech-savvy, research reveals a broader demographic—professionals of all ages, entrepreneurs, and remote workers embracing borderless living. The chapter explores the cultural values that unite nomads, including freedom, autonomy, and minimalism, and examines how digital nomadism is not just a career choice but a lifestyle shift. By analyzing data from the Global Digital Nomad Study, the chapter showcases how digital nomads form a decentralized yet connected global movement, redefining work, community, and identity.

CHAPTER 3: The Digital Nomad Lifecycle (Overview)

Chapter 3 explores the different stages of a digital nomad’s journey, from aspiring traveler to seasoned global citizen. It outlines the common phases nomads experience—initial excitement, logistical learning curves, lifestyle adjustments, and long-term sustainability. The chapter highlights key challenges, including financial stability, visa complexities, and maintaining work-life balance on the road. It also introduces the concept of the Flexpat, a new stage beyond traditional nomadism where individuals blend long-term travel with deeper local integration. Using insights from the Global Digital Nomad Study, this chapter provides a roadmap for understanding how digital nomads evolve over time and redefine mobility.

CHAPTER 4: How Digital Nomads Earn Their Living (Overview)

Chapter 4 delves into the diverse ways digital nomads sustain their location-independent lifestyles. It categorizes income sources into remote employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, and passive income, illustrating how nomads blend multiple revenue streams to maintain financial stability. The chapter examines high-demand skills, digital platforms enabling remote work, and the economic strategies—such as geoarbitrage—that allow nomads to maximize earnings while minimizing expenses. Drawing from real-world examples and data from the Global Digital Nomad Study, it highlights how digital nomads are reshaping traditional work models, proving that financial security and career success are no longer tied to a single location.

    CHAPTER 5: Geoarbitrage (Overview)

Chapter 5 explores geoarbitrage, the financial strategy that allows digital nomads to maximize their income by living in locations where the cost of living is lower while earning in stronger currencies. The chapter explains how nomads strategically choose destinations that offer high quality of life at a fraction of the cost, leveraging differences in global economies to achieve financial freedom. It examines popular geoarbitrage hubs like Bali, Chiang Mai, and Medellín, highlighting their affordability, infrastructure, and thriving nomad communities. Through real-world examples and economic analysis, this chapter demonstrates how geoarbitrage is a key pillar of sustainable long-term digital nomadism.

CHAPTER 6: How Individual Struggles Laid the Foundation for a Digital Nation (Overview)

Chapter 6 explores how the personal challenges faced by digital nomads—loneliness, instability, financial uncertainty, and visa struggles—have unintentionally fostered a sense of collective identity and cooperation. As individual nomads navigate the realities of remote work and long-term travel, they develop informal support systems, from online communities to co-living spaces, shaping a decentralized but interconnected global network. The chapter argues that these shared struggles have organically laid the groundwork for what functions as a Digital Nomad Nation, bound not by borders, but by common experiences, values, and mutual support. In overcoming these hurdles, digital nomads are forging a new societal model.

    PART 2: Collective Power (Overview)

CHAPTER 7: Digital Nomad Hotspots (Overview)

Chapter 7 examines the global cities and regions that have become digital nomad hubs, attracting thousands of remote workers each year. It explores why certain destinations—such as Bali, Chiang Mai, Medellín, and Lisbon—offer the ideal mix of affordability, infrastructure, culture, and community. The chapter highlights the role of co-working spaces, digital nomad visas, and government incentives in shaping these hotspots, as well as the challenges of over-tourism and local integration. Using insights from the Global Digital Nomad Study, this chapter paints a dynamic picture of how digital nomad communities form, thrive, and influence local economies worldwide.

CHAPTER 8: The Nomad Nation Is Already Forming (Overview)

Chapter 8 explores how digital nomads, once seen as independent travelers, are unintentionally forming a new kind of global nation—one without borders, a central government, or fixed land, but united by shared values, experiences, and digital connectivity. The chapter examines how nomads create decentralized networks through online platforms, co-living spaces, and recurring migration patterns between key hubs. It also delves into the emerging economic and political influence of this borderless community, as governments recognize nomads as a valuable demographic. Through research and real-world examples, this chapter argues that the Digital Nomad Nation is no longer theoretical—it already exists.

CHAPTER 9: The Dark Side of Digital Nomadism (Overview)

Chapter 9 explores the often-overlooked challenges and ethical dilemmas of the digital nomad lifestyle. The chapter delves into the unintended consequences of digital nomads on local economies, including gentrification, cultural displacement, and rising living costs in popular nomad hubs. It also addresses the privilege gap—how digital nomadism is often accessible only to those from wealthier countries with strong passports. By balancing the lifestyle’s appeal with its complexities, this chapter offers a nuanced view of the realities behind the movement.

CHAPTER 10: Models for a Digital Nation (Overview)

Chapter 10 explores possible frameworks for how a Digital Nomad Nation could evolve into a recognized entity. It examines historical and modern precedents, such as micronations, special economic zones, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), to assess how digital nomads might organize politically and economically. The chapter discusses whether digital nomads could establish their own digital passports, economic networks, or even virtual governance structures. Drawing from real-world experiments and policy trends, it presents the challenges and opportunities of creating a borderless, stateless society. Ultimately, this chapter argues that digital nomadism is not just a lifestyle—it’s the foundation for a new kind of nation.

    CHAPTER 11: Tuvalu (Overview)

Chapter 11 examines the small island nation of Tuvalu as a case study in digital nationhood. As one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate change, Tuvalu is actively exploring ways to digitize its national identity, economy, and even government to ensure its survival beyond physical borders. This chapter draws parallels between Tuvalu’s digital transformation and the potential future of a Digital Nomad Nation, highlighting how a country can exist primarily in the digital realm. By analyzing Tuvalu’s strategies—such as virtual governance, online citizenship, and blockchain-based national assets—this chapter offers a glimpse into how digital nomads might one day create a fully virtual nation.

CHAPTER 12: Decentralized Autonomous Enclaves (Overview)

Chapter 12 explores the concept of Decentralized Autonomous Enclaves (DAEs) as a potential model for a Digital Nomad Nation. These DAEs—small, self-governing communities powered by blockchain technology, smart contracts, and decentralized governance—offer a blueprint for how digital nomads could organize without a fixed geographic territory. The chapter examines real-world experiments with crypto-based communities, remote-first work hubs, and special economic zones that align with nomadic values of autonomy and flexibility. By analyzing the benefits and challenges of decentralized governance, this chapter argues that digital nomads could form a functional, borderless society leveraging emerging technologies and economic innovations.

    PART 3: The Future (Overview)

    CHAPTER 13: Visionary Possibilities (Overview)

Chapter 13 explores bold, futuristic possibilities for how digital nomadism could reshape global society. It examines potential developments such as nation-as-a-service models, digital citizenship programs, floating cities, and blockchain-based governance that could redefine traditional concepts of statehood and belonging. The chapter also considers how advancements in remote work, artificial intelligence, and decentralized finance might empower digital nomads to create sustainable, borderless lifestyles. Drawing from emerging trends and speculative scenarios, this chapter envisions a world where location independence is not just an alternative lifestyle but a dominant paradigm, challenging the way we think about nations, economies, and global mobility.

CHAPTER 14: What Comes Next? (Overview)

Chapter 14 explores the future trajectory of digital nomadism and the potential evolution of the Digital Nomad Nation. It examines key trends shaping the movement, including government policies on digital nomad visas, corporate shifts toward remote work, and emerging digital infrastructure. The chapter also addresses the growing influence of nomad communities in shaping local economies and international regulations. Looking ahead, it discusses the challenges and opportunities in making digital nomadism more inclusive, sustainable, and legally recognized. Ultimately, this chapter argues that digital nomads are not just adapting to the future of work—they are actively creating it.

CHAPTER 16: The Digital Nomad Nation Manifesto

CHAPTER 17: The Call to Action

    EPILOGUE: The Flexpat (Overview)

The epilogue introduces the concept of Flexpats, the next evolution beyond digital nomadism. While traditional digital nomads embrace constant travel, Flexpats blend mobility with deeper, semi-permanent roots in select locations, balancing global freedom with local stability. This emerging group prioritizes longer stays, legal residency options, and professional career growth, while still maintaining location independence. The chapter explores how factors like digital nomad visas, global tax strategies, and changing workforce dynamics are enabling this shift. Serving as a bridge to the next book, The Flexpat (R)evolution, this epilogue highlights how nomadism is evolving from an adventurous lifestyle into a sustainable, long-term global identity.
